Cross references in word 2016 not updating
Besides which, how is Word to 'know' the 'corruption' described in this thread isn't intentional and the bookmarked range was meant to be expanded?
I can't see the point of 'purging' bookmarks from a document - that would destroy all cross-references. Why not just check what they span (via Insert|Bookmark Goto) and correct any errant ones (a trivial undertaking by comparison)?
Important: If you want to create cross-references to figures and tables, their captions must have been created with Word's , the field to which the cross-reference links has been deleted (for instance, a deleted figure or table caption produces this error).
If you are not sure which element the cross-reference referred to before, undo the update and check.
Sometimes you’ll add a cross-reference to a figure or table, and part of it (the number usually) will display in bold text.
Now if that bookmark moves to another page as you edit the document and it repaginates, you can easily update that reference without having to manually check it.
In a few paragraphs I'll show you how to update your entire document in just a couple of keystrokes.
A slightly more complicated task is cross-referencing numbered paragraphs.
First off we're going to assume that you're correctly using Word's paragraph numbering capability.
